Launch Note

Kaladi Tamil: the next edition of NHM Writer

"Kaladi Tamil" is the next edition of NHM Writer, redeveloped for current Windows and macOS systems with native platform frameworks, signed releases, and transparent security checks.

Years ago, we developed NHM Writer. Over time, it became part of the everyday typing routine of many Tamil users, especially for writing and communication.

"Kaladi Tamil" is the next edition of NHM Writer. It is a redevelopment of that same effort for the present generation of operating systems and applications.

Over the years, many users wrote to us about issues they were facing with NHM Writer on newer Windows systems and modern applications. Many others also asked for something that had long been missing: a proper Mac equivalent. "Kaladi Tamil" has been developed in response to those requests.

Why a redevelopment was needed

Software does not stand still. Operating systems change, application frameworks change, security expectations change, and the way text input is handled by modern platforms also changes. A tool that served users well for many years can gradually become harder to maintain and less predictable on current systems.

"Kaladi Tamil" is our effort to take NHM Writer forward in a cleaner and more modern form, while preserving the familiar typing experience users value.

Built on native platform frameworks

On Windows, "Kaladi Tamil" follows Microsoft's Text Services Framework, the modern native framework for advanced text input. On macOS, it follows Apple's InputMethodKit, the native framework for custom input methods.

That matters because Tamil input software works close to the operating system itself. It has to cooperate with many applications, many text controls, and many system-level behaviors. The more closely it follows the platform's own path, the better the chance of long-term reliability.

Built with care

We have also tried to approach distribution responsibly. Signed releases, integrity checks, and VirusTotal reporting are part of that effort. These are not claims of perfection. They are simply part of our attempt to show transparency, good faith, and seriousness in how the software is built and shared.

"Kaladi Tamil" is free software, and it is intended to remain free.

"Kaladi Tamil" is also not a commercial venture. It is being built and shared as a free effort, and for that reason the turnaround time for some fixes and updates may sometimes be slower than what users would expect from commercial software.

A modest launch

It is important to say this plainly.

Software of this kind works with low-level operating system APIs. Because of that, there will almost certainly be edge cases, compatibility issues, and situations where things do not behave exactly as expected. Different applications and different system setups can expose problems that are difficult to foresee fully.

Sometimes operating systems may require multiple restarts before a newly installed keyboard is fully registered, and in such situations a measure of patience may itself resolve the issue.

We have made our best efforts to build "Kaladi Tamil" carefully, with attention to privacy, security, and long-term maintainability. But if it falls short in some situations, please excuse us. The work has been undertaken sincerely, and we are ready to listen to feedback and address issues whenever time permits.

That is the spirit of this launch: not a claim of perfection, but a careful redevelopment of NHM Writer for the present day.

Looking ahead

"Kaladi Tamil" is only one step in a larger direction we are working toward. We are also working on something we call Life Computing, and we hope to share more about that soon.

We also hope that one day all of this language-related work will be open-sourced.

  • We will fine-tune keymaps based on feedback.
  • We will release a Keymap Developer Kit to create custom XMLs and edit existing XMLs to fine-tune them.
  • We will add more Indian languages in future.
  • NHM Converter will also see light one day.
  • We hope to collaborate with a few YouTubers for video demos, just as some YouTubers voluntarily created demo videos for NHM Writer.
  • Lastly, and more importantly, we thank our past employer, New Horizon Media, for allowing us to carry this journey forward into kāladi ātma intelligence.
